Choosing the Right Footwear
Your feet determine whether you actually enjoy the day or spend the afternoon thinking about blisters. Comfort isn't negotiable here. You need proper walking shoes—not trainers from the shopping center, not flip-flops, actual shoes designed for sustained walking.
Look for shoes with good arch support and a cushioned sole. You'll be on your feet for 3-4 hours at a time around Lough Ennell, and that's when you notice the difference between adequate and excellent footwear. Waterproof options are worth the investment in Ireland—wet feet make everything worse.
Don't wear new shoes on your outdoor day. Break them in on a couple of short walks first. And socks matter too. Wool or wool-blend socks keep your feet dry and prevent friction blisters better than cotton.
What to Look For in Walking Shoes
- Arch support that matches your foot's natural curve
- Cushioned heel and forefoot for shock absorption
- Breathable material with waterproof protection
- Lightweight design—heavy shoes tire you faster
- Non-slip sole for wet grass and rocky paths
